Fabriek: Petrus Regout, Maastricht
Petrus Laurentius Regout founded a pottery factory in 1836, evolving from a glass grinding company established in Maastricht in 1827. Facing challenges due to the Belgian Revolution in 1830, the situation improved in 1834, allowing for the import of raw materials from Belgium. The introduction of steam-powered glass manufacturing and pottery production marked the company's expansion. Initially focusing on simple earthenware for the local market, Regout employed English craftsmen and imported materials to compete with popular English creamware.
In 1870, the transition to a partnership under the name Kristal-, Glas- en Aardewerkfabrieken van Petrus Regout marked the involvement of his sons. Following Petrus' death in 1878, the company became a limited partnership and introduced the sphinx as its trademark in 1879, later renaming to N.V. Sphinx voorheen Petrus Regout & Co in 1899. The venture into wall tile manufacturing began in 1902 in Frederik Regout's factory in Limmel near Maastricht, further expanding into the sanitary ware department in 1917.
