Soft urn, Hella Jongerius

Rare early vase by Hella Jongerius. This so-called Soft Urn was designed in 1993 and is made of a soft rubber. Even in her graduation project and the subsequent projects like the Soft Urn, she attracted attention with her fascination for unexpected material treatments combined with sometimes very well-known shapes. The Soft Vases series is made of flexible plastic. The design is based on antique patterns, but executed in very unconventional materials. The Urn would immediately signify her breakthrough, as international critics also noted in this design her intelligent, sometimes seemingly contradictory play with the archetypal, twisted form, the suggestion of classic alabaster, and the visibly left casting seams of the final product made of soft plastic.
